Sunidhi Chauhan

Indian pop, indi pop or Hindi pop prevails in many names in the over 1 billion Indian population. With Hindi as the main language there are many other languages where pop music entertains the masses and classes.

It was introduced in the 80s by Nazia Hassan a Pakistani singer who gave India áap jaisa koi meri zindagi mein aaye' with music by Biddu that rocked the country and made pop viable in a nation based on classical music. The youth embraced it and the adults gave it a listening ear and from then pop entered the bloodstream of Indian music. Suddenly it was everywhere Mithun Chakravorthy had all pop songs, like disco dancer, and Rishi Kapoor danced on songs like 'sara zamana hasino ka diwana, paise ye paisa. Since then at least one song in a movie is made the pop style if not then a remix does happen so the song can penetrate to a wider audience.

Famous pop singers in the 90s include Usha Utup, Sharon Prabhakar and Peenaz Masani. Then the main stage was grabbed by Baba Sehgal, Alisha Chenai, Sagarika, Shaan, Lucky Ali and Colonial Cousins (Leslie Lewis and Hariharan). In more recent times Sunidhi Chauhan has rocked the Indian pop screen with songs like Krazy Kiya Re, Sonu Nigam with dil ye dil, Asha Bhosle, Bombay Vikings, Juggy D and Sanober.

Not only has Indian pop intrigued Indians but it has also captivated people around the world. Moulin Rouge had the song Chamma Chamma by Alka Yagnik. Jay Z mixes Punjabi with his songs in England and Rishi Rich of Indian origin works with Britney Spears. Bombay Rockers is a duo an Indian Danish duo who sings English and Hindi and are have sold more albums then they can believe.

Punjabi rap and Hindi rap are growing in popularity and has more and more listeners today. No doubt the Indian music industry is one of the biggest in the world churning out new and more albums of movies, self-videos, dance videos and gaining a high sell rate too. Movie songs are released before the movie to build hype around the movie and this promotional tactic does work profitable. With an ever growing demand by the youth and today's modern Indians pop music is in demand than ever before.
